Classics Department: Postgraduate Studies

Taught Programmes

The Department offers three taught programmes:MA in Ancient History; MA in Classics; MA in Classical Art and Archaeology. A further taught programme, theMA in Late Antique and Byzantine Studies, is offered by the History Department. These programmes are intercollegiate, offered jointly with King’s College London and University College London. Together, they offer an unparalleled range of courses that provides for around 70 students per year. Students study from a menu of courses which covers not only Greek and Latin literature, the major periods of ancient history, ancient philosophy and the Greek and Latin languages, but also key technical skills such as papyrology, epigraphy, and palaeography. The programmes provide ideal training for those considering further  research , as well as an additional year of high level study for those seeking to add to their Undergraduate qualification.

The Department also contributes to the MA Hellenic Studies offered by the Hellenic Institute (History Department) at RHUL.

MA Ancient History
RHUL/Central London; FT/PT; 12/24months

This MA offers opportunities both to experience the great range of ancient historical studies and to specialise in key areas. We offer courses on periods from Near Eastern History to the Byzantine Empire in which a vast range of methodologies are deployed and sources considered.

MA Classics
RHUL/Central London; FT/PT; 12/24months

This MA offers opportunities to study the full range of Classical literature and language. Students may improve their languages or learn new technical skills. The range of courses covers ancient philosophy, Greek and Latin literatures from Homer to Late Antiquity, and Classical Reception.

MA Classical Art and Archaeology
RHUL/Central London; FT/PT; 12/24months

This programme is designed to provide training in the techniques of art history and archaeology, and offers a wide range of courses on Greek and Roman art and archaeology from all parts of the Mediterranean world.
