Royal Holloway, University of London is committed to providing an environment which nurtures research, learning and teaching of the highest quality, and which advances knowledge, the personal development of its students and staff, and the public good, locally, nationally and throughout the world..
The Department hosts the largest number of postgraduate students in the country. Many of our successful doctoral students have been appointed to full time lecturing posts in a range of HEI in the UK and overseas.
The Department benefits from a range of unique performance spaces which include a traditional Japanese Noh theatre, a fully equipped black box studio, the substantial Victorian Boilerhouse, and several additional studio spaces.
The Department has a lively postgraduate culture comprised of 20-30 MA students who benefit from working together on core courses and practical projects during the year. The MA in Theatre offers a unique combination comprising critical and theoretical core courses with a specialist practical pathway in Applied Drama (now accepting applications for 2010-2011), Directing, Physical Theatre and Performance and Playwriting. The MA in Research is designed for students preparing for PhD study, and we are able to supervise students interested in a variety of areas of theatre history (Greek or Roman theatre, Medieval theatre, Renaissance, Restoration, Victorian) as well as contemporary British and global theatre.
All postgraduate students are encouraged to attend research days organised by the Department. Each term a research day centres on a particular theme. This year papers will be presented around the themes of the body and the spectacular. IN the summer term post-graduates are responsible for organising the research day and inviting guest speakers from other institutions.
