Unit Zero – Sample Unit

Unit Introduction

Welcome to Unit Zero of the e-learning version of Royal Holloway's MSc in Information Security!
Perhaps you are considering applying for this distance learning version of this well established course?
Maybe you have already applied and have received, or are hoping to receive, a formal offer of a place on our course?

Whatever your exact situation is, you are to be congratulated for taking the trouble to find out more about how the course is delivered.
Indeed the purpose of Unit Zero is to give prospective students a flavour of the courseware, and taste of the study style of the MSc course.

All the taught study materials for this masters course are split into units. Each unit is delivered online as a discrete entity. Studying a module of the course involves completing ten or eleven units of study. For this reason, it seemed sensible to write Unit Zero, our "taster" in a similar style to many of our other units.

At the end of this unit you should be familiar with

  1. The structure of the programme
  2. The structure of course materials and how to navigate through them
  3. How the materials make use of interaction for active learning
  4. How the materials make use of readings, tasks and exercises to support reflective learning

You should also have some idea of the role of the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) in

  1. The delivery of course materials
  2. Supporting student discussions with both fellow students and course tutors

Finally, you should have an understanding of

  1. The flexibility as well as the limitations of studying this online course.
