Unit 3 – Basic Principles

Introduction: 3.3. The basic model of a cipher system: The two types of cipher system - 1

There are two different types of cipher system and understanding the differences between them is absolutely crucial. This is arguably the most important issue of this module – so pay close attention!

The difference between the two cipher systems hinges on the relationship between the encryption and the decryption key. Obviously in any cipher system these two values must be closely related. You clearly cannot encrypt a plaintext with one key and then later decrypt the resulting ciphertext with a totally unrelated key. The precise relationship between these keys defines not only the type of cipher system, but also all of its resulting properties.
