MEPs to be quizzed by sixthformers

Sixthformers from all over the region will descend on Royal Holloway this month for a special European Parliament Question Time.

On Thursday 31 October, a panel of three MEPs and a representative of the European Parliament Youth Convention will field unsolicited questions from a student audience in the Picture Gallery.

The event, developed by Anne Mullen (Italian) and Joanne Wright (Dean of HSS), kicks off with a welcome by the Federal Trust's Dr Martyn Bond, a representative of the UK Office of the European Parliament

Roy Perry (Conservative), Nicky Clegg (Liberal Democrat), Caroline Lucas (Green) and Sam Dobbyn (Youth Convention) expect questions on the purpose of the European Parliament, the need for common currency, the threat of terrorism, issues of multiculturalism and migration.

Students from the European Studies programme will act as mentors for groups of sixthformers, leading briefing sessions prior to the event.

Local pupils meet Shadow Minister

Alistair Burt MP met six pupils from the Royal Holloway Schools Consortium, when he joined thousands of prospective students at the June Open Day.

Alistair Burt MP talks to Rebecca Lee of Magna Carta School.

The former Shadow Minister for Higher & Further Education made the first of several planned visits to the College this summer.

The aim of his visit was to gain an insight into the policies and logistics of student recruitment in a research-led university institution, in the context of widening participation and global education. Mr Burt's visit was one of five days the MP is due to spend at Royal Holloway as an Industry and Parliament Trust (IPT) University Fellow. The fellowship scheme - the brainchild of former Principal Drummond Bone - allows MPs and Peers to spend 5 days each in four universities to provide them with an in-depth appreciation of a wide range of issues faced by universities today. Mr Burt is the first MP to take part in the programme, which is managed by the Industry and Parliament Trust in association with Universities UK.
