Bishop visits College

John Gladwin, the Bishop of Guildford, recently visited the College at the invitation of the Anglican Chaplain, Andrew Taylor, the aim of the day being to show him something of College life and research interests.

The day began in conversation with the Principal around areas of common interest to the Church and the University, and carried on over lunch with various representatives of Christian life in the College.

In the afternoon he was first the guest of Professor John Bowyer for a tour of the School of Biological Sciences, centering upon particular aspects of its research excellence. Then,as the guest of Professor Andrew Bowie, a seminar was held on the work of the Lithuanian philosopher Emmanuel Levinas under the auspices of the Humanities and Arts Research Centre.

The day was completed by Choral Evensong in the Chapel at which the Bishop preached and confirmed one student member of the congregation.

From correspondence after the day there is no doubt that he left deeply impressed by the range of excellence embodied by the College in all aspects of its life and work.
