Car Parking

Use of cars in and around the College is limited by conditions agreed with local authorities. Residents of the North A30 Properties may park their cars in spaces around the halls of residence but first must obtain a permit. Apply to College Security for one. If you do not have a permit, you are likely to find that your car has been clamped.

Residents should be aware that there are strict limitations on the use of these cars; for example, you may not take your car on to the campus. Please read the College leaflet called "Students' Cars and Car Parking" or go to www.rhul.ac.uk/advice/cars for all the information on parking and use of cars. At the beginning and end of the academic year, when residence contracts start and finish, rules are relaxed to allow residents to move their belongings. However, if you wish to move at other times, please obtain a temporary pass from College Security.

Booking the Highfield Common Room

The Highfield Common Room is available for residents to book for private functions or for meetings of clubs and societies. Applications for the booking of the common room must be received at least 5 working days in advance of the event.

The following conditions apply to room booking:

  1. The maximum standing capacity in the Highfield Common Room is 50 persons;
  2. There is no disturbance to residents from loud music or loud behaviour;
  3. The student booking the room is responsible for the behaviour of all guests;
  4. The student booking the room is responsible for leaving the room in an acceptably clean and tidy state after use;
  5. The room must be vacated by 11.30 pm.

Failure to adhere to these conditions may result in a fine being imposed by the Warden.

To book the room, the written permission of the Customer Services Manager is required.

You can get a booking form and full conditions here.

Please hand or email your completed application form to Highfield Reception for approval. Please note that your booking is not confirmed until the form has been returned to you with the signature of the Customer Services Manager.

Recycling

There are four recycling units located in the car park area between Penrose Houses 1, 3 and 5. These accept:

1. Aluminium and steel food and drink cans
2. Plastic bottles
3. Mixed glass
4. Paper

In the car park just outside the entrance to the music department, Wettons Terrace, there is one recycling bin for paper and cardboard.

In each kitchen there are two reusable recycling bags, one green and one blue. There is a poster on the notice boards specifying what items can be recycled. The cleaners will empty the rubbish every weekday but do not dispose of the items for recycling. Students are responsible for the recycling and must take the bags to the recycling units.

Loss of Swipe Cards or Room Keys

If you lose or lock your card/keys in your room you need to go to Highfield Reception or Security (Founder's East). The college has a 'One shot Procedure' in the Hub and Highfield reception so that whenever a student leaves his/her keycard in their room, there is a double check of their ID and signature against their records and then the student is issued with a temporary card that lasts for two hours so that they have time to retrieve their original keycard from their room. Once they have done this, they return to reception, hand back the temporary card and their college card is re-programmed. If a student locks themselves out three times, they will be charged a fee of £18.50 for the keycard.
