Getting Connected

The Royal Holloway residential and campus wide network has been upgraded to allow for easier and faster access to the internet. The service is called CampusNet. You will be able to access CampusNet using either a wired or a wireless connection.

Wireless connection
To register your computer wirelessly you will first need to switch your wireless on and detect the CampusNet network. To do this, on most laptop computers you will be able to click on the icon on the bottom right hand corner of your screen to search for available wireless networks.

Highlight CampusNet and click to connect.  When you get a message saying that your pc is connected open your web browser, e.g. Internet Explorer or Firefox, to open your homepage or browse to a web site.

The extent of RHUL CampusNet wireless coverage is shown in this map

Wired connection
There are CampusNet plug-in points both in halls of residence and also in some of the PC Labs and libraries.

Using a network (Ethernet) cable plug your pc into the Ethernet port on the wall in your room.  Then open your web browser, e.g. Internet Explorer or Firefox, to open your homepage or browse to a web site.

Connecting to the RHUL Computer Network
Once you have opened a web browser the first thing you will notice is that your homepage will automatically redirect to a registration page.  This is the normal redirection and you will only need to do this the very first time you plug in your laptop (or desktop) pc.

At the next screen you will be able to authenticate on the RHUL network with your individual username and password.  You will then be prompted to restart your browser after 60 seconds.  Subsequently if you are offline for more than 12 hours will need to log in again.

You will now be signed in to the network and be able to access the internet and network resources such as your (Y:) drive.  (see FAQ – How do I connect to my Y: drive from CampusNet)

Printing from my room to an RHUL printer
It is possible to install "Follow-Me" printing software on to your own computer. This enables print jobs to be added to the queue and saved, for up to 48 hours, until you choose to print them via a Print Release Station. For more information please see our Printing page.
