Vodafone Invites Dr Exworthy to Discussion on the Future of Health

Dr Mark ExworthyDr Mark Exworthy has been invited by Vodafone to join an event as part of their sponsorship of a programme called Future Agenda: a unique cross-discipline programme which aims to unite the best minds from around the globe to address the greatest challenges of the next decade. The event on the 4th February is a roundtable discussion on 'The Future of Health'. Dr Exworthy is Director of the CPSO, and Deputy Director of the Institute for Leadership and Management in Health.19/01/10

Head of School Participating in ABS and EFMD Sponsored International Deans Programme

International Dean's Programme 2009-2010Prof Chris Smith, Head of the School of Management, is participating in the ABS and EFMD sponsored International Dean's Programme 2009-2010. This programme is made up of three sessions in three countries and involves networking with new deans and heads of department, as well as visiting business schools around the world to see how they work. In December a two-day session was held at Judge Business School and Cranfield School of Management, and was attended by delegates from all over Europe, China and the USA.

Director of Moscow Airport Gives Talks on Customer Service and Marketing

DME marketing campaignA guest lecture was recently given by Daniel Burkard, Director of Business Development and Government Affairs from Moscow Domodedovo International Airport. Daniel explained to MA Marketing students how the airport differentiates itself by providing excellent customer service. He then later gave a presentation to MBA International Management students focusing on a practitioner’s perspective on industrial marketing.

The Apprentice Star Gets Down to Business

Clare Young with Kingston College studentsSixth formers from seven colleges were grilled in true ‘Apprentice’ style as former candidate Claire Young set them a business task to get their teeth into. The Enterprise and Marketing Challenge took place at Royal Holloway on Wednesday 25th November, and the panel of judges included included several staff from the School of Management (Professor Chris Smith, Dr Alex Reppel and Chris Howorth) as well as Claire Young and representatives from Proctor and Gamble. » Read more about the challenge 08/12/09

AMBA Gala Dinner 2009

RHUL AMBA dinner representativesThis year's AMBA Gala Dinner was held at the Millennium Hotel in Mayfair, London, on 12th November. After dinner the keynote speaker Will Hutton, writer, former editor-in-chief for The Observer and current vice-chair of The Work Foundation, presented a very insightful perspective on what business schools can do to prepare MBA graduates for today’s challenges. Following this, the prestigious MBA Student of the Year Award 2009 results were announced. La Fromagerie's Patricia Michelson's Talk on Entrepreneurship

Patricia MichelsonMSc in Entrepreneurship students in the School of Management are being given a taste of entrepreneurial life through a series of talks. First up was big cheese and owner of the renowned cheesemongers La Fromagerie, Patricia Michelson, who gave a passionate account of her love of food and how this evolved from buying a whole wheel of Beaufort Chalet d’Alpage on a skiing trip in Meribel, to setting up two shops in London and writing the internationally acclaimed book ‘The Cheese Room’. School Launches New Student Ambassador Scheme

Student Ambassadors 2009This week saw the first training session for eight Student Ambassadors for the School of Management. Recruited during Induction Week, these first-year students will play a key part in promoting the School over the next three years. Each September a new group of students will be recruited to join the team, and more experienced members will move on to activities requiring their increased knowledge and experience. An afternoon training session, led by members of staff and an external consultant, took place earlier this week: the session was great fun and very well-received by the Ambassadors. Their first engagement will be to assist at the forthcoming UCAS Open Day on Wednesday 25th November. 06/11/09

European Foundation of Management Development (EFMD) Seminar

EFMD seminar attendeesIn October the School of Management hosted a one-day seminar for the European Foundation of Management Development. The seminar focused on the presentation of the new EPAS Manual and Application Datasheet, the interpretation and practical application of the EPAS standards and criteria, as well as the key stages of the EPAS accreditation process. Prof Chris Greensted and Prof Ulrich Hommel, Associate Directors with EFMD, delivered the seminar to an audience of over 50 participants from both UK and international management and business schools. Prof Hommel later commented: "Thank you again for being such a wonderful host for our EPAS Seminar. The seminar was overall a great success and the participant feedback indicates that all attendees have enjoyed the environment at RHUL very much." 21/10/09

First Association of MBAs GMS Cluster Event of 2009/10

MBA studentsOn 7th October the School of Management and the Association of MBAs (AMBA) jointly hosted the first GMS Cluster Event of the academic year. The highlight of the evening was ‘A Dialogue between a Headhunter and a HR Director’ with Hilary Sears and Melanie Symes. Joining MBA students from Royal Holloway were fellow students from Surrey School of Management, Brunel Business School and Distance Learning MBA students.

TV Product Placement a Welcome U-turn

Professor Chris HackleyProduct placement is to be allowed on UK commercial television programmes for the first time, overturning the government’s blanket ban. Professor Chris Hackley argued previously that relaxing the ban was necessary for the health of the UK TV industry. New Book on Systems Practice by José-Rodrigo Córdoba-Pachón

Dr Jose-Rodrigo Cordoba-PachonDr José-Rodrigo Córdoba-Pachón, has just had a new book published by Routledge: Systems Practice in the Information Society was released in October 2009. It aims to help students, practitioners in information systems, and policymakers appreciate and deal with the complexities of the so-called Global Information Society. Delegation from China's UIBE Visit the School

Prof Chris Smith with a representative from UIBEA delegation from the University of International Business and Economics (UIBE) visited the School of Management in August. Professor Chris Smith welcomed them, and gave a presentation on how the School has expanded over the years while enhancing its research and teaching quality. Beijing-based UIBE is one of the elite universities in China, and its delegates have been touring a dozen UK universities to learn how to raise their academic and management capacity. » More about the Chinese delegates' visit 18/09/09

CRIS Members Leading the Way on Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability

CRISMembers of School of Management research centre CRIS (Centre for Research into Sustainability) have contributed to a special issue of the Journal of Corporate Governance that has just been published on corporate responsibility and sustainability. Sustainability Lecturer Lutz Achieves Personal Goal of Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro

Dr Lutz Preuss at the summit of KilimanjaroDr Lutz Preuss has just returned from Tanzania, where he accomplished a personal goal: to climb Mt Kilimanjaro. At 5,895 metres it is the highest peak in Africa, and of much of the rest of the world outside the Himalayas and Andes. From about 3,000 metres onwards climbers wander above the clouds, but that also means that as soon as the sun is gone down temperatures drop well below zero. “Having spent much of my working life teaching sustainability, I thought I’d have some profound thoughts at the top, perhaps about Kili’s receding glaciers”, said Dr Preuss. “To be honest, I couldn't get beyond, 'what a hard slog, I want to crawl back into my sleeping bag now!'” » View photographs 07/07/09

First Annual Dinner of the Hong Kong MBA Alumni Chapter

2009 Hong Kong MBA Alumni Annual DinnerThe first Annual Dinner of the Hong Kong MBA alumni chapter was held at the Renaissance Kowloon Hotel in Hong Kong on 24th April 2009. The event was organised by the students and around 25 alumni attended; there was dinner, networking, and some fun games with bottles of wine given away as prizes! Currently this chapter is made up of students who have graduated from the MBA programme the School of Management runs in partnership with the University of Hong Kong's School for Professional and Continuing Education (HKU SPACE). The programme director Dr G. Harindranath and the HKU SPACE team (Dr Wai Wan, Dr Daniel Yan, Mr Albert Hung and Mr Samuel Chu) also attended the dinner. 04/06/09

Research for the Prince of Wales' Accounting for Sustainability Project

Dr Jeffrey UnermanProfessor Jeffrey Unerman (and Professor Anthony Hopwood of the Saïd Business School) are leading and co-editing a case study project investigating how sustainability accounting and reporting can be effective in changing organisations' sustainability strategy and actions. New Research into 'Critical Care' Paramedics Use of New Technology

Dr Ashok JashaparaDr Ashok Jashapara has received an ESRC Research Fellowship to evaluate an innovative pilot scheme that has developed around 25 ‘critical care’ paramedics in the south east of England – who will use new technologies in their ambulances such as blood transfusion and body scanning machines. Rare UK contribution to prestigious journal

Dr Alan PilkingtonDr Alan Pilkington has just had an article published in the very prestigious Journal of Operations Management, published by Elsevier. Analysis shows he is only the 15th person from the UK to get something into this journal within the past decade. Brendan McSweeney invited to give lectures in Japan

Professor McSweeney lecture in KurobeProfessor Brendan McSweeney gave two invited lectures to the globally located Japanese company YKK, the world’s largest manufacturer of fastening products: the zips used by the US astronauts who walked on the Moon were designed and manufactured by YKK. He presented a lecture to senior management and board members at YKK’s head office in Tokyo on “Balance – the Greatest Challenge for Leaders”. At the company’s Kurobe factory and research centre he spoke about “Reflections on Ways of Developing YKK’s Innovative (New Product) Capability and Achievements”. His audience was almost one hundred engineers. 15/04/09

Despite the credit crunch, a masters degree is still popular with graduates

Lecture at the School of Management A recent article in The Independent said this year has seen a rise in applications for pre-experience business and management courses: at a time when jobs may seem to be scarce, graduates are increasingly looking towards a masters degree in order to learn skills they believe will give them an advantage in the job market. Kim Heffernon, 23 from Purley, Surrey, is studying MSc in International Management at RHUL, "At a job interview recently I definitely got a sense from the other candidates that having a Masters is an advantage. Exploring employee attitudes and motivation in a range of organisations

Dr Chris ReesAccording to research released by Kingston University and Royal Holloway, University of London, people who have a passion for their work are happier and perform better. Dr Chris Rees, from the School of Management at Royal Holloway, said, ′This and other research suggests that engagement is strongly correlated with genuine opportunities for employee voice and involvement in workplace decisions. Employers clearly need to address this aspect or the danger will be that engagement strategies may be perceived as no more than empty rhetoric′. School of Management graduate studies film production in Hollywood

Hollywood BoulevardMorgan Rostagnat, who graduated from RHUL with a BSc in Management in 2007, has been accepted on one of the world’s top postgraduate film producer programmes. The UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television trained actors such as James Dean and Ben Stiller and producers on countless hit movies including Batman, The Color Purple, Independence Day and The Bourne Ultimatum. Morgan moved to Los Angeles after graduation and has been working in script development for Hollywood production companies while continuing to make his own movies. The Master of Fine Arts Producer’s programme at UCLA accepts less than 10% of applicants and enrolls around 20 students annually. Morgan will begin the two-year course in September. Morgan demonstrated his film-making talent at RHUL with a production made for his final year MN345 Advertising and Promotion course. Dr Catherine Wang impresses at Sage Group Innovation Awards

Dr Catherine WangDr Catherine Wang was recently invited by Sage (UK) Limited, part of the Sage Group Plc, to be a panel member of the Sage Group Innovation Awards. “We were hugely impressed with the care and attention to detail with which Dr Wang reviewed the various submissions and I know that everyone at Sage was delighted that we had an independent review carried out,” said Paul Stobart, CEO UK and Ireland Region. The Sage Group Innovation Awards are prestigious awards for innovative ideas among all the employees of the Sage Group. Dr Wang was the only academic expert in the evaluation panel. 14/03/09

Accounting professors invited to deliver inaugural course at top South African university

Professor Jeffrey Unerman with Professor Christopher NapierProfessors Christopher Napier and Jeffrey Unerman, along with Prof. Craig Deegan from RMIT University in Melbourne, are currently at the University of Pretoria, where they have been invited to deliver the inaugural course (Financial Accounting Theory) on the new Masters degree in Accounting Sciences. The University of Pretoria is the largest residential university in South Africa and also the country's leading research university in terms of research output per annum since 1997. Their Department of Accounting is mainly involved in Chartered Accountancy education and they consistently rank among the top 3 universities in South Africa both in terms of pass rates and number of successful candidates in the external board examination set by the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants. 10/02/09

Harveen Chugh to judge MiniGrant competition for enterprising students and staff

MiniGrants for Enterprise 2009The School's Dr Harveen Chugh will be one of several judges on a panel awarding ten grants of £2,000 towards developing an entrepreneurial idea: teams must include at least one RHUL staff member and one undergraduate or postgraduate student. The purpose of the scheme is to fund the development of commercial or social enterprises, which if shown could work, may later attract follow-on funding from WestFocus/PARK of up to £50,000. » MiniGrants for Enterprise 2009 27/01/09

Sameer Hosany highly commended for doctoral research

Dr Sameer HosanyThe doctoral thesis of Dr Sameer Hosany, Lecturer in Marketing at the School of Management, has been chosen as a Highly Commended Award winner in the 2008 Emerald/EFMD Outstanding Doctoral Research Awards. His study entitled ‘The determinants and consequences of emotional responses towards tourist destinations’ was one of the outstanding entries in the Hospitality Management category.
