The School of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures at RHUL offers a wide variety of degrees and courses in combinations to suit almost everyone’s interests and prepare you for a huge range of careers.
We teach French, German, Italian and Spanish to honours degree level – aiming for native or near-native fluency in speaking, reading and writing by the time you take your final examinations. German, Italian and Spanish can be studied ab initio – by beginners with no prior knowledge of these languages – or with an A Level in them. All French degrees require A Level French; Single Honours German requires A Level German.
We also teach the literature, culture, visual art and philosophy of France, Germany, Austria, Italy, Spain and Latin America as part of our degrees – always with regard to the historical contexts of these areas of study.
Some of our courses focus on French, German, Italian and Spanish film. If you are particularly interested in film, you might want to consider our special programme of Film Studies alongside a modern language. Another option is to consider philosophy as part of your degree in Modern Languages. Or if your main interest is History, you can apply to read History with an International Year, which includes language courses and a year abroad.
If you want to study the literature and culture of Europe and Latin America without studying the languages themselves, have a look at CLC (Comparative Literature and Culture). You can take this degree with no languages or in combination with one of French, German, Italian or Spanish.

Royal Holloway participates in the University of London Taster Course Programme, which has its own website that you might like to explore. Our next 'Exploring Languages' Taster Day will take place on 11 June 2010.
