Postgraduate Study in Modern Languages: what are my options?

The School of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures offers teaching and supervision for a variety of University of London postgraduate degrees:

  • MA (a taught degree, currently MA in Holocaust Studies and MA in History, Literature and Culture 1450-1750)
  • MA by Research (a 1-year research degree culminating in a 30,000-35,000 word thesis)
  • MPhil (usually a 2-year research degree with a thesis of 60,000 words)
  • PhD (a 3- or 4-year research degree with a thesis of up to 100,000 words)

In practice, the MPhil is a relatively rare degree — most students opt for taught MA, MA by Research or PhD. All these degrees, except the taught MA, are awarded on the basis of a single piece of research, completed under the supervision of an expert in the field, and presented as a thesis of specified length, written in English.

All research degrees are available in French, German, Hispanic Studies (including Latin American studies) and Italian. Comparative or interdisciplinary research is increasingly common and the School has the expertise to supervise a huge range of such projects.

Further information all of these possibilities is available via the links in the box on the right. For an overview of each Department's chief areas of research specialism, click on the links below:
