James Dack is Senior Lecturer in Music at Royal Holloway, and is currently Head of Department. He studied at the University of Liverpool, where his doctoral research was on the history of the Esterházy Kapelle in Eisenstadt during the eighteenth century. Since 1980 he has been associated with the critical edition of the works of Joseph Haydn (Joseph Haydn Werke), issued by the Joseph Haydn Institut, Cologne; he collaborated successively with Georg Feder and Marianne Helms on volumes of Haydn's early masses (1992, 1999 respectively) and is currently engaged in a volume of Haydn's late vocal and dramatic works. He recently took over the responsibility for a major research project funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Board and located at Royal Holloway, working with the Project Coordinator Dr Sarah Hibberd on the UK operations of RILM (Répertoire International de Littérature Musicale).

His teaching at Royal Holloway includes various second- and final-year optional courses in music of the eighteenth century and, in the taught MMus programme, an introduction to textual criticism and critical editing with respect to music. In the past he has been involved in the performing activities of the Department, directing the choir and various orchestral ensembles.
