Particle Physics Steps on the Accelerator Pedal Accelerator science underpins a wide range of scientific disciplines, from medical imaging, photon and neutron sources for studying materials and biological structures to particle colliders that recreate the conditions shortly after the Big Bang. Some of these projects are constructed on a global scale - the next machine to be built in particle physics is so large that there will only be one in the world - the International Linear Collider. |

Computers fight Avian Flu Computers at Royal Holloway and 10 other universities and research laboratories have been playing a major role in the fight against avian flu. As part of an international collaboration, these computers have been searching for possible drug components against the avian flu virus H5N1. |
| Physicists collaborate with CERN Particle Physicists at Royal Holloway are taking part in the construction of the ATLAS experiment - a massive detector designed to measure collisions of protons. The complex ATLAS particle detector will be the size of a five storey building and is one of the largest collaborative efforts ever attempted in the physical sciences. |

Golden Eagle Pupils from your school, spend the day in the Physics Dept. They are divided into six groups of "secret agents" who compete against each other to return gold bars to the BANK, which have been stolen by a foreign power. |
