Royal Holloway is part of SEPnet, the South East Physics Network, which enables us to do more promotion of Physics throughout the region and offer support to those teaching Physics in the South East.
This annual event is free of charge and open to all members of the public. The department will be open from 10am-4pm for you to come and explore our hands-on activities and talk to staff and students in our department.
Level: All
Date: 27th February 2010
Particle Physics
This day long event is for Year 12 students studying A-Level Physics. Students and their teachers explore the fundamental particles of our Universe through hands-on activities, lab demonstrations and lectures.
Level: Year 12 Students
Curriculum links: Structure of matter, particle accelerators.
Date: tbc
Condensed Matter
This day long event is for also for Year 12 students studying A-Level Physics. A series of lectures, lab demos and hands-on activities will let students investigate the structure of matter and will explore how the can behave in strange and unexpected ways when we look at them at different temperatures or at the quantum scale.
Level: Year 12 Students
Curriculum links: Material properties, nature of the electron.
Date: tbc
GCSE Physics Revision Events
These revision events are part of the South East Physics Network’s (SEPnet) GCSE physics roadshow. Each event will focus on a different aspect of the GCSE science specification and will feature a lecture and an exhibition where students will be able to explore the concepts they are learning in class through a series of hands-on demonstrations.
Event 1
Level: Year 10 Students
Curriculum links: Energy and the current issues in energy production
Date of Event 1: 14th January 2010Event 2
Level: Year 10 Students
Curriculum links: Radioactivity, radiation and its uses
Date of Event 2: 16th March 2010
School Talks
We are happy to arrange for a member of the department to come and give a talk at your school. We are able to provide talks to any age group. Descriptions of some of the available talks are given here (link to www.rhul.ac.uk/Physics/Outreach/schools/talks.html). If you have any particular requests please get in touch with our Outreach Officer.

Operation Golden Eagle
This day long event is for students in Year 8. Students act as secret agents in a quest to recover a stash of stolen gold bars. They must use their scientific and mathematical skills to overcome the obstacles facing them and reclaim as many gold bars as possible in a competitive game.
The event is held on the College campus and schools can send up to 8 students along to the day. If you would like to enter students into this year’s competition please contact the outreach officer.
Level: Year 8
Curriculum links: Planning and carrying out practical tasks, test ideas and explanations.
Date: 26th November – Gifted and Talented students*
27th November – Women only day*Please note this event is for state-funded schools only
Open Days
Open days are the ideal opportunity for potential undergraduates to come and explore the College campus. You will have a chance to meet teaching staff in the department, as well as current undergraduates who can tell you what university life is really like.
Posters
The department has an extensive range of posters that we are happy to send out to your school. Please contact the Outreach Officer if you would like any.
