My research interests include: the transformation of contemporary Europe; the dynamics of borders in a globalizing world; and cosmopolitanism as a politics of space. I am currently conducting two research projects. The first looks at the emergence of ‘cosmopolitan communities’ in the wake of the 7/7 bomb attacks in London, particularly the formulation of new solidarities which cut across existing ethnic and cultural groupings, and the idea of London as a site of a unique cosmopolitan experience. The second project examines responses to recent allegations of abuse of Iraqi civilians by British soldiers in the wider context of the Blair government’s discourse of Iraq as an 'uneven battlefield' where 'unfair constraints' are placed upon British troops by a combination of human rights law and public expectations.
