2010 Graduation

 

Graduation ceremonies for the 2009/10 undergraduate finalists, 2008/9 MSc students, and 2009/10 PhD graduates, were held on 16 July 2010 in the Picture Gallery and Chapel of Founder's Building.

Congratulations to undergraduate finalists David Armitage, whose third year average of 73.75% earned him the PIR prize for best performance; Oleg Giberstein, who was awarded the PIR prize for outstanding piece of work; and Olivia Kolbe-Booysen, winner of the Driver Prize for her dissertation result. All three prize winners graduated with first class honours and were part of a graduating class that that included eight distinctions overall, making it one of the best performing cohorts in the Department's history. The academic staff who taught these students over the last three years know what a special and close-knit group they have become.

The MSc students who attended graduation represented a cohort of 45 students whose achievements included five distinctions. Several of these students have gone on to PhD study, including two in the Department.

Five research students were awarded PhD degrees on the day:

• Nicholas Anstead for his thesis, "A Comparative Study of Factors Influencing the Adoption and Impact of E-Campaigning in the United States and the United Kingdom."
• Monika Barthwall-Datta, for her thesis, "Analysinig Security in South Asia: Non-State Actors and the Securitisation Framework."
• Yeon-Ok Lee, for her thesis, "Online mobilization and identity building: A case study of Nosamo, the supporters network of the 16th president of South Korea."
• Guido Renke, for his thesis, "The 'European Information Society: Governance and the Decision-Making Process for the ICT Policy Awards and Standards."
• Hasan Turunc, for his thesis, "Aspects of Democractic Transition in Turkey in the Context of EU Candidature: Thinking Beyond Dichotomies."'

Also completing in 2009, but not in attendance at the graduation ceremony, was Colin Fleming, whose thesis is entitled, "The Clausewitzian Trinity: A Theory of War For The Modern World. A Case Study of the Wars of Former Yugoslavia 1991-1995."
