Royal Holloway, University of London is a College of the University of London. The University of London is a federal university, founded in 1836. The year 2000 marked a century of membership of the federation by Royal Holloway. The University of London comprises over 60 institutions of varying size and profile, from colleges with many thousands of students to small research institutes. It is the largest and most diverse university in Britain and one of the largest in Europe. University of London degrees have an international reputation for excellence.

 

Teaching and Research Excellence

 

Royal Holloway currently ranks 13th nationally in the independently published Good University Guide and 22nd nationally in the Independent's Complete University Guide. The Department of Politics and International Relations ranked 29th in the United Kingdom in the Independent's guide.

 

The Department of Politics and International Relations was ranked in the top ten small Politics departments in the UK in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), finishing 9th in the UK among departments of Politics with fewer than 20 researchers, and 2nd in the UK among those with fewer than 15 researchers.

 

In the Times Higher Education Supplement Table of Excellence published on December 18, 2008, Politics and International Relations at Royal Holloway is placed 33rd overall in the United Kingdom. The College as a whole ranked 24th out of 159 higher education institutions in the United Kingdom in the Times Higher table.

 

Overall, 70% of the Department's research publications were judged to be in the top three categories: "internationally excellent" (31%), "recognised internationally" (35%) or "world-leading" (4%) in terms of their "originality, significance and rigour". This was the first time that the Department participated in the RAE.

 

In the Times Top Universities 2008 League Table, Royal Holloway is ranked in 28th position in the country (out of 120). The Department of Politics and International Relations is singled out for praise.
