The largest student employer on campus is the Students' Union which employs over 300 students on a part time basis! The Students' Union recruits part time staff in a variety of jobs including bar staff, security staff, technical staff, entertainments, and TW20's coffee bar. The Facilities Management department offers the opportunity of part time work in the Halls of Residence or in various catering outlets around the campus.

The Library

Students are employed in the library in a number of different roles:
Shelving Assistants - This is regular work, through the term time only, with responsibility for sorting and shelving returned books.
Weekend Student Library Assistants - This job covers 46 weeks of the year and each assistant will work two out of three weekends. This requires serious commitment to the job.
Saturday Library Assistants - These Assistants work every Saturday through the term time only.
Student Library Assistants - This involves working on the loans desk, checking books, sorting new stock, shelving and administrative work.
Project Assistants - This is irregular work which is organised to cover specific needs, including registration, summer moves and cataloguing for example.

Estates and Facilities can offer employment opportunities for both one-off events, including car parking on open days for example, and regular employment. Opportunities for regular employment range from Recreation Assistants working in our new Sports Centre and litter clearance operatives in our Direct Labour Team.

The Careers Service has occasional short term opportunities to work on preparing mailshots, assisting at Careers Fairs and helping on telephone surveys which all provide valuable experience. Sections within the Registry can offer regular and ad hoc employment opportunities. Some sections employ students on a regular basis, sending out prospectuses for the Educational and International Liaison Office for example, as well as on a ad hoc basis to help out in areas ranging from administrative tasks such as filing and mailshots, to promoting Royal Holloway at events such as Open Days.

A large number of reputable local companies recruit part-time staff through 'Job File'. This is available from the Education and Welfare Office of the Students' Union.
Local employment agencies, local newspapers and shop windows will also promote part-time or vacation employment. If you are currently working for a national company, you can speak to your current employer about transferring to a branch near Royal Holloway.

Royal Holloway guidelines limit the number of hours that you can work to 16 hours per week during term-time in order that your academic study does not suffer as a result of paid employment.

You will need to have a National Insurance number before you start working. Home students should already have their NI number and EU students can obtain one by visiting the Benefits Agency in Woking with their passport or National Identity card. Details of how to get to the Benefits Agency are available from the Students' Union Welfare Office.

Government regulations have recently changed to allow non EU students to work part-time in the UK. Further details are available from the Students' Union Welfare Office.

Also do not forget that the more you earn in the vacation the more funds you will have during term-time when your availability for paid work will be much more limited.
