Levon Parikian is to be the visiting conductor of the Playing Week Concert, staged by the Department of Music at Royal Holloway, University of London on 19th January 2003 at 7.30 pm. The programme will take place in the College's Picture Gallery and
will consist of: At just 36 years old Levon Parikian has a wealth of international experience and musical accomplishment behind him. Described by the legendary Russian conductor and teacher, Ilya Musin, as 'a conductor of undoubted talent'; Levon has worked with some of the greatest musical institutes and artists in the world. He first studied timpani and percussion at the Royal Academy of Music in London before taking an interest in conducting under the influence of George Hurst. In 1997, Levon won a position with Ilya Musin's St. Petersburg conservatoire. Levon Parikian has been the Musical Director of Opera Del Mar and the Elektra Ensemble and is currently Chief Guest Conductor of the City of Oxford Orchestra with whom he made his South Bank debut in 2000. He has worked with a wide range of artists, including Hans Werner Henze, Donald Swann, Joanna MacGregor, Pete Townsend (of The Who), the Philharmonia and the Academy of St. Martin's-in-the-Fields. He has conducted an eclectic mix of musical styles including classical orchestral, opera, chamber, jazz, Ghanaian drumming, musical theatre, ballet and contemporary dance. Members of the public are also very welcome to a Conducting Workshop, on Saturday 7 June 2003, when Levon Parikian works with student conductors and orchestra.
