College News15 June 2004C'est delicieux! Pupils experience a day of French cuisine and culture at Royal HollowayPupils from St Jude's Primary School in Englefield Green were given a taste of France when they came to Royal Holloway, University of London last Friday, to take part in an 'Experience of France' day. Run by Royal Holloway's French Department, activities included cooking, singing and computer work, all with a French theme. The 30 ten and eleven-year old pupils were accompanied by their teachers, Mrs Chris Davies and Mrs Alison Wilkinson, in what was the last day of a week of French-themed activities for the children. The fun-packed day began with a 'Visiting a French market' session, where the children learned to identify fruits in French. Using the fruits, the children then got busy cooking - under the expert direction of Cordon Bleu teacher Catherine Thorin, and her colleagues Elodie Gouet and Anne Mullen, who work in the College's modern languages departments. With their help, the children prepared a 'Salade de fruits' which they sampled afterwards with great enthusiasm. After a brief presentation from Eddie Hughes, Head of French at Royal Holloway, the children were given a session in the computer suite, in the College's award-winning International Building. Following lunch in the parkland setting of Royal Holloway's campus, the day was brought to a close with the children showing their appreciation of their 'Experience of France' day with a fine rendering of 'Au Clair de la lune'. Teacher Chris Davies said: "We chose to come to Royal Holloway so that the children could experience authentic French language - and to make use of this fantastic resource on our doorstep!"
