College NewsDate: 25 February 2004 Public lecture: The Ombudsman - Who Are Her Customers? The Lakeman Lecture The Ombudsman - Who Are Her Customers?, by Parliamentary & Health Service Ombudsman Ann Abraham, will take place at Royal Holloway, University of London, in the Main Lecture Theatre on Thursday 4 March at 5.30pm. Ann Abraham has held the dual offices of Parliamentary Commissioner for Administration (Ombudsman) and Health Service Commissioner for England since 2002. A 1974 graduate of Bedford college, her career includes roles as Legal Services Ombudsman and Chief Executive of the National Association of Citizens Advice Bureau. The Ombudsman's role is to provide an independent and impartial means of securing redress for injustice. In this lecture, Ann Abraham will set out her vision of how the development of a modern and responsive Ombudsman service can contribute to the raising of standards across the public services. The Lakeman lecture was endowed
in 1981 by the Electoral Reform Society in memory of Miss Enid Lakeman,
to cover the field of electoral system and democratic processes embracing
political, sociological and technological aspects of representation
at all levels. The first Lecture was given in 1982 by Enid Lakeman,
an alumna of Bedford College. Bedford College merged in 1985 with Royal
Holloway College to form Royal Holloway, University of London.
