Royal Holloway plays out
The American Dream
The highly acclaimed Drama Society of Royal Holloway, University of
London is to stage a unique production of The American Dream
by radical American playwright Edward Albee.
Albee's polemical 1960 play
focuses on an all-American family and their unusual visitors one lunchtime.
The text was originally written as dark comedy satire, uneasy with modern
ideals of material wealth and the commodification of feelings such as
love, family and intimacy. Described by the publishers as "a vicious
little parable", the play has shocked audiences for many years
with its unconventional and dramatic take on the world.
This production promises to be innovative and engaging, transforming
a white-walled lecture theatre into a far-removed world where anything
can happen. The student cast and production team is assembled from a
range of year groups and subject areas such as Drama, Classical Studies
and Geography. These performances do not aim criticism at any particular
government or nationality, but are poignant in a climate when conflicts
over money and social values dominate the headlines.
The Drama Society is one
of Royal Holloway's highly active music and arts societies, open to
all students from any course. The society produces over seven full-length
plays every year, including original writing, devised work and culminating
with a summer open-air Shakespeare performance in the grounds of Royal
Holloway's spectacular Founder's building.
