Royal Holloway celebrates graduation

A distinguished actor, a pioneering geographer and an eminent historian are among over 1500 people graduating at Royal Holloway, University of London this week.

Honorary Degrees of the University of London will be conferred on Mr Timothy West, Professor David Rhind and Professor Joe Mordaunt Crook.

Internationally acclaimed actor Timothy West CBE, will be awarded the Degree of Doctor of Literature. He made his first appearance on the London stage in 1959 and has served as Artistic Director of the Old Vic and as Chairman of The London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. He has been President of the Society for Theatre Research since 1999.

Professor David Rhind FRS, FBA, is Vice-Chancellor and Principal of City University, and was formerly Director General and Chief Executive of Ordnance Survey. An innovator in mapping technology in the 1970s, he created some of the first computer-produced maps and in 1997 received the Decade Award for Achievement by the Association of Geographic Information Systems. He will be awarded the Degree of Doctor of Science (Economics).

Former Director of the Victorian Studies Centre at Royal Holloway, Professor Joe Mordaunt Crook CBE, FBA, will be awarded the Degree of Doctor of Literature. His distinguished academic career has spanned the Institute of Historical Research, Bedford College, the Warburg Institute and the University of Leicester. He is currently Professor Emeritus and a Visiting Professor of Architectural History at Royal Holloway.

The graduands receive their Honorary Degrees during Royal Holloway's 2004 Graduation Ceremonies, which take place in the College's Chapel and Picture Gallery over four days, from Tuesday 13th to Friday 16th July.

Principal, Professor Stephen Hill said: "Royal Holloway's Graduation Ceremonies are important occasions for our graduating students and also for their families, friends and teachers. The achievements of our graduates represent the culmination of three or four year's hard work, dedication and financial sacrifice. We congratulate them for their much-deserved success in gaining this University of London qualification."
