Public lecture: The Greeks and Afghanistan

The Hellenic Institute lecture, The Greeks and Afghanistan, by Professor Simon Hornblower, will take place at Royal Holloway, University of London, in the Arts Lecture Theatre on Thursday 13 May 2004 at 5.30p.m.

The lecture will focus on the Greek cities of Afghanistan using, among others, analysis of literary and archaeological sources. Founded by Alexander the Great, little remains of the cities, as the Taliban have recently destroyed much of the country's cultural heritage.

A renowned historian both nationally and internationally, Professor Hornblower lectures in the History, Greek and Latin departments at University College London. He is widely published, and has written key textbooks, including The Greek World 479-323 BC (Routledge). He is a major authority on Thucydides, and is also co-editor of the Oxford Classical Dictionary; a major reference work for the classical field.
