Korea University chooses Royal Holloway for exclusive £1m student
deal
Prestigious Korea University has selected Royal Holloway, University of
London for an exclusive UK academic collaboration to take up to 50 Korean
students a year.
The agreement, which has
been backed by a £1 million investment by Korea University, marks
the beginning of a deeper collaboration between the universities. The
first students will arrive in the UK in September 2004. A section of
a major new Halls development at Royal Holloway will be named "Korea
University - Sang Il Lee Hall", and the students will be placed
in residences across the campus.
The initiative to collaborate
with a UK university forms part of a wider economic strategy to develop
connections between Korea and the rest of the world. Educating Korean
students overseas will play a key role in this process, bringing a new
generation of employees with international experience and intellectual
and cultural skills to the country. Five international universities
have been selected as overseas partners for the scheme: the University
of British Columbia in Vancouver, the University of California, USA,
Griffith University, Australia, and Royal Holloway, University of London,
representing the UK.
Korea University is ranked
as one of Korea's top three. The institution was founded in 1905, and
played a leading role in the country's resistance against colonialism
and achieving freedom for the Korean people in the mid-twentieth century.
Sang Il Lee (57), a key sponsor
for the collaboration, is an alumnus and noted benefactor of Korea University's
College of Business Administration, and the CEO of Iljin Global Limited,
a leading manufacturer of automotive and mechanical components.
Lee's interest in sponsoring
an academic link between Korea and the UK has evolved from a highly
successful joint business-venture between Iljin Global and the UK Company,
Bloxwich Engineering, in the merger company, Iljin Bloxwich, which is
a world-leading supplier of Container Door Locking Mechanisms.
An official signing of the
agreement between Korea University and Royal Holloway will take place
on March 9 at a special dinner Reception in Royal Holloway's renowned
Picture Gallery. Invited delegates include Korean Diplomats, industry
leaders and media, together with key business representatives from London
and South East England.
President Yoon-Dae Euh, Korea
University, says:
"We are delighted to have reached this landmark agreement with
Royal Holloway. Korea University and Royal Holloway represent two of
the top institutions in the East and West. We are proud of our close
association, and look forward to exploring further ways to bridge the
cultural divide and raise tomorrow's global leaders."
Professor Stephen Hill, Principal,
Royal Holloway, University of London, says:
"This is a powerful alliance between two prestigious universities,
and we are very pleased to be spearheading the activities of UK Higher
Education Institutions in Korea. Being selected as an international
site for this significant venture marks great progress".
