College News5 August 2004University brainpower is set to boost London's arts industryRoyal Holloway, University of London is one of six universities to jointly establish an important knowledge transfer agency for London's arts and cultural industries. The London Centre for Arts and Cultural Enterprise (LCACE) is the result of a £1.45 million award from the Higher Education Innovation Fund (HEIF): its aim being to open academic doors to businesses and create access to a mass of knowledge and expertise. In recent years, the collaboration between universities and industry has increasingly been recognised as an important stimulant for economic growth. The six LCACE partners - Royal Holloway, University of London; Birkbeck College: Kings College, London; Courtauld Institute of Art; City University; Goldsmith College, University of London; Queen Mary, University of London - have built an impressive list of alliances including, Shakespeare's Globe, Royal Opera House, BBC, National Theatre, TATE, British Library, V & A and English Heritage. By working in collaboration, LCACE intends to combine their academic strengths to provide a leading edge resource that is aligned to the real needs of the arts and cultural sector of the capital. LCACE's aims and objectives have been welcomed by London's leading arts and cultural organisations, as a much needed resource that will build upon the existing provisions and provide new training opportunities, to develop successful and sustainable businesses. LCACE activities will focus on student enterprise training, continuing professional development, cultural networking, business development and industry-focused research and consultancy. Target domains will include visual, audio-visual and performance arts, publishing, heritage and tourism. Steven Wilson, Royal Holloway's Director of Research and Enterprise says: " Royal Holloway has a wealth of research expertise in the arts, with all departments receiving top scores of 5*, 5 and 4 in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise. The College's Research & Enterprise department, charged with improving links with - and income from - industry, looks forward to developing these areas further. We will be appointing a dedicated Business Development Manager (Arts & Humanities) to work on the LCACE project. I also believe the formation of LCACE will lead to an increase in collaborative projects between the university partners".
