College News10 March 2004Royal Holloway students give divine performanceStudents from Royal Holloway, University of London will perform Gilbert & Sullivan's famous opera, The Mikado, in St. Luke's church hall, Reading. It will be the first production to take place on the church's newly renovated stage in ten years. St Luke's has been a venue for dancing, plays and sporting events, but fell into disrepair ten years ago. However, when Gemma Cox, 21, a drama student at Royal Holloway, Egham, decided to bring a production of The Mikado to her home town of Reading, she set the wheels in motion to bring St. Luke's stage back to life. The opera will be performed by Royal Holloway's Savoy Opera Society, which was set up by students in 1966. Gemma, who is a member of the society says: "Following The Mikado's sell-out local performances, I was determined that we should extend the production to other areas this year. With my friends and family in Reading, and their connections with the church, St Luke's seemed to be the obvious choice." The Cox family have been attending St Luke's Church for over 20 years, and Gemma's father, Roger Cox, is helping with the renovations. "The church hall recently received a grant for improvements," says Roger. "A new front to the stage has been fitted, and the toilet facilities are being improved. Should other funds become available, the kitchen will be upgraded, and further parts of the building will be renovated." The Mikado performance runs from 11-12 March, 7.30pm, at St. Luke's Church Hall, Erleigh Road, Reading. Tickets are priced at £5.50, (concessions £4.50).
