NHS Innovations Hub comes to Royal Holloway

The NHS Innovations South-East Hub transfers to Royal Holloway this month, in what promises to be an exciting partnership that will pair NHS clinical and service innovation with high quality innovation management support from the Hub.

Operating from Royal Holloway's Enterprise Centre, the Hub aims to transform inventions in clinical practice into real commercial solutions, generating significant improvements in patient care and treatment. The Hub will support the 93 NHS Acute Trusts and Primary Care Trusts (PCTs) in the region, with the support of smaller hub centres at Canterbury, Southampton and Harwell.

Dr David Mackintosh, Chief Executive of the Hub said: "We are delighted to have the support of Royal Holloway and SEEDA*, as well as the Office of Science and Technology (OST)* and the Department of Health (DH)*, as we roll out this new service to all the NHS Trusts in the South-East. We fully anticipate that lots of ideas from all types of staff in the NHS in the South-East will soon be flowing through our pipeline, ultimately leading to significant healthcare improvements for patients."

170,000 NHS staff based in the South-East will be encouraged to come forward with ideas. The Hub aims to select these ideas and harness them; transforming concepts into innovative healthcare solutions. Turning these concepts into reality could yield exciting results, for example, new diagnostic testing, innovative medical equipment, improved diagnostic software and more efficient drug delivery systems are all potential areas of benefit.

The NHS Innovations Hub, which is one of nine based across England, has received £2 million funding over a three-year period from SEEDA, DH and OST.

It is anticipated that local NHS hospitals, PCTs and their staff will also directly benefit from the support services provided by the Hubs. Consultant and Director of Research & Development at Ashford & St. Peter's Hospitals NHS Trust, Jeremy Wright commented: "As an innovative and forward looking Trust we welcome the support NHS Innovations South-East will provide us and other local Trusts when it is located at Royal Holloway. We have worked closely with Royal Holloway in the past and with support from this new service, many new healthcare improvements with benefits for patients will be delivered."

NHS Innovations South-East is one of 12 companies based at Royal Holloway's Enterprise Centre. Supporting the growth of knowledge and technology-focussed companies, the Centre acts as an 'incubator', while also giving access to academic expertise.
