Inaugural Lecture: The Nowness
of Now: The Importance of the Present Moment in a Mediatised Culture
The inaugural lecture, The
Nowness of Now: The Importance of the Present Moment in a Mediatised
Culture, by Professor John Ellis, will be held at Royal Holloway,
University of London. The lecture will take place in the Main Lecture
Theatre, on Tuesday 23 November at 5.30 p.m.
The increasing centrality
of electronic media since World War Two has brought about a re-evaluation
of everyday life, and it has emphasised the importance of the present
moment. The lecture will explain this process and outline some of its
consequences.
Professor Ellis is Head of
Media Arts Department at Royal Holloway and author of Seeing Things
(I.B.Tauris 2000) and Visible Fictions (Routledge 1982). His current
research interests are documentary, the textual effects of media organisation,
and the nature of the present moment. He is principal researcher for
the major AHRB funded project entitled 'Did ITV Revolutionise British
TV?'
