Smart Card technology on
show
Royal Holloway's innovative Smart Card Centre's recent open day, brought
industry, staff and students together in what proved to be a successful
networking event.
Specialising in training
and research in Smart Card technology, the Centre has been in operation
since 2002, and was founded by Royal Holloway, Vodafone and Giesecke
& Devrient. Exhibitors at the event included both students and industry
professionals such as ORGA, O², Gemplus, Philips, Visa, Axalto,
SiVenture, Barnes International and Mastercard/Multos.
The event provided key opportunities
for students studying Information Security at the College to network
and seek career contacts and information. Various practical demonstrations
took place, showcasing the latest Smart Card products and technology,
and prizes were awarded to the top exhibitors.
Mohammad Alhussein won the
award for best student exhibit: "Participating in the Smart Card
Centre's open day was a great experience for me personally," he
said. "It gave me the opportunity to interact with pioneers and
experts in the Smart Card field. After spending a year studying information
security at Royal Holloway, and focusing on Smart Card security in my
project, it was a very interesting to gain first-hand feedback from
industry leaders. Winning the Crisp Telecom Award is an honour that
I would like to share with my supervisors and colleagues - my goal is
to continue my studies at the SCC at Royal Holloway to obtain a PhD
in the field of Smart Card security"
The Smart Card Centre's Director,
Keith Mayes, said: "The day was a great success and I was overwhelmed
by the positive response from our industry supporters, visitors, staff
and students. A special thank you must go to our industry founders,
Vodafone and Giesecke & Devrient, as without their valued support
and foresight the Centre would simply not exist."
Graham Higgins, Head of winning
industry exhibitor SiVenture, said: "We were delighted to be a
part of this quality event and were greatly encouraged by the range
of guests and the way SiVenture was received, particularly the award
for 'Best Industry Exhibit'
