Talented sportspeople win Royal Holloway scholarships

Fourteen students, who compete in their sport at national or international level, have been awarded scholarships to support their studies at Royal Holloway, University of London.

The students will be presented with their awards at a special ceremony in Royal Holloway's renowned Picture Gallery on 18 November.

The scholarships are the latest to be awarded under Royal Holloway's STARS (Student Talented Athlete Recognition Scheme). Royal Holloway boasts a number of world-class performers, many of whom directly contribute to the College's representative teams and, importantly, to local clubs.

Award-winners include members of the NEC Harlequins Rugby Football Club, England's athletics team, British equestrian dressage squad, Great Britain's sailing team, junior champion fencers, leading golfers, and an inline hockey player. Past members of the scheme have included the women's World Orienteering Champion, the women's World Champion canoeist, GB's No.2 men's gymnast and a leading GB decathlete.

STARS, which is just entering its ninth year, was developed by the College to provide financial and practical support to those elite sportspeople who are studying at Royal Holloway. Members of the scheme get free access to campus sports facilities and local sports centres; financial assistance of up to £750 towards travel and training; access to sports physiotherapy at heavily discounted rates; an adviser to act as liaison between them, their department and the College; and guaranteed accommodation during their degree programme.
