Student's film idea is a winner

A student from Royal Holloway, University of London, has won an impromptu award at the 2004 Edinburgh Film Festival. The contest, Live! Ammunition! involved competitors pitching a movie concept to a panel of film and TV producers, and an audience. With just two minutes to make their pitch, entrants had to convince the judges that their idea could make it as a film.

Nidhi Tuli, from Bombay, is a British Council Scholarship student and is studying an MA in Feature Film Screenwriting at Royal Holloway, University of London. Spurred on by a friend, Nidhi entered the competition at the last minute and was selected as the winner by the panel.

Nidhi said: "I had no intention of pitching that evening, I had merely gone to hear other people. After listening to a few pitches, my friend Nicola encouraged me to go as well. It took me some time to convince myself and then I raised my hand."

"My story was about an Indian girl who comes to London after an arranged marriage, and how she finds her feet, and love, outside of that marriage. It's given me the chance to show film producers my script; it's great knowing that they actually want to read it. Winning has been a huge boost to my confidence."

Nidhi developed the story during her course. "My tutors, Susan Rogers and Sue Clayton, were encouraging throughout, " she says. The Masters in Film and Screenwriting at Royal Holloway enables students to gain invaluable experience in many aspects of film work, whether they go on to become screenwriters, agents, producers or development executives. As part of their course, they are required to complete a final draft script for a screenplay.

Live! Ammunition! is brought to the Edinburgh Film Festival annually by Raindance, an organisation dedicated to fostering and promoting independent film in the UK and around the world. In addition to running training courses, Raindance hosts the prestigious British Independent Film Awards in London, as well as Live! Ammunition! at various venues.
