Royal Holloway's starter
for 10

Students from Royal Holloway,
University of London beat Greyfriar's Hall (Oxford) in BBC2s University
Challenge on Monday 20 December.
Captained by Mathematics
student, Emily Dongray, the team faced Jeremy Paxman in what is often
described as the toughest quiz on television. Richard Freeman
(English, Drama & Theatre), Linda Jones (Classics) and Clare Nettleton
(Psychology) joined Emily in this first-round match.
"Facing Jeremy Paxman
and another team of hopefuls on national television was like walking
out to perform Shakespeare without having learnt the lines," said
team member Richard. "I will admit that I was terrified. However,
Paxman is more forgiving when he is not on camera. We first met him
during lunch and make-up, where he was interested to learn more about
Royal Holloway, as he drives along the A30 quite a lot and has admired
Founder's building."
Questions ranged from quantum
physics and dead rock stars to African literature and Victorian architecture.
The Royal Holloway team was
selected back in June, following an entry exam of 80 questions, which
had to be completed in an hour. After the initial selection, the team
met the shows researchers in London for further testing and an
interview. From 103 applying teams, Royal Holloway was one of the final
28 to make the filming stage.
