Public lecture: Measuring the Mind: Beatrice Edgell, Pioneer Woman Psychologist
of Bedford College
An inaugural lecture Measuring
the Mind: Beatrice Edgell, Pioneer Woman Psychologist of Bedford College,
by Professor Liz Valentine, will take place at Royal Holloway, University
of London, in the Main Lecture Theatre on Monday 15 March at 5.30 p.m.
The lecture will discuss
Beatrice Edgell's contributions to British psychology, focusing on the
reasons for her success, at a time of when access to education for women
was limited. Edgell established one of the first psychology laboratories
in Britain, and trained a number of women who later played a prominent
role in the development of scientific and professional psychology. She
also made significant theoretical and empirical contributions to psychological
research.
After graduating with a PhD
from UCL in 1968, Professor Valentine joined Bedford College as a Lecturer
in Psychology. She became Senior Lecturer in 1992, Reader in 1997 and
Professor of Psychology in 2003. She moved to Royal Holloway & Bedford
New College in 1985 as a result of Bedford's merger with Royal Holloway.
Professor Valentine's main research interests lie in philosophical and
historical psychology, the psychology of music and memory.
