College News9 March 2004Public lecture: Music and Culture at the Court of Clement VIThe inaugural lecture Music and Culture at the Court of Clement VI, by Professor Andrew Wathey, will take place at Royal Holloway, University of London, in the Main Lecture Theatre on Thursday 18 March at 5.30pm. The lecture will examine the political and cultural contexts underlying the role of music and musicians at the court of Pope Clement VI. New contexts for individual works are explored, as are the inter-relationships between musicians, poets and scholars, including Philippe de Vitry, Jean des Murs and Petrarch. Professor Wathey studied at the University of Oxford, and taught at the Universities of Cambridge and Lancaster before joining Royal Holloway in 1989. He was appointed Reader in Music in 1995 and Professor of Music History in 1999. His publications include Music in the Royal and Noble Households in Later Medieval England (1989); Manuscripts of Polyphonic Music: The British Isles 1100-1400 (1993), and the joint-edited Fauvel Studies (1998), as well as many articles on music in England and France in the later middle ages. He is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, and co-director of the Digital Image Archive of Medieval Music.
