What's on at Royal Holloway 2004-5

Royal Holloway, University of London has an exciting and diverse programme of events planned for the coming months. From concerts and family events to recitals and public lectures; there is something for everyone to enjoy.

Event highlights include the public lecture series, which takes place between October and March, showcasing the College's most exciting research, as well as bringing brilliant speakers from around the world to Egham. Subjects over the next few months include the Greek Revival in British Architecture, Islam, Crusades and Violence, the continuing eruption of the Montserrat Volcano and The Music of the Primes. Additionally, June 2005 will see the launch of a new series of Magna Carta lectures.

This autumn, Royal Holloway has collaborated with Leighton House Museum and the British Museum, to create a special exhibition: The Price of Beauty: Edwin Long's The Babylonian Marriage Market at Leighton House, in London. This painting is considered to be one of the major works of the Victorian era and is one of the most prized possessions in the Picture Gallery at Royal Holloway. The painting will be surrounded by ancient artefacts collected by the British Museum, and is a special exhibition not to be missed. A Study Day in November will cast new light on the fascinating story that lies behind it.

Forthcoming seasonal events include the Nine Lessons and Carols Service in the College Chapel, which will be followed by a Reception in the Picture Gallery. In the summer, Royal Holloway will hold its Garden Party, an annual event in aid of local charities, with craft and local community stalls, children's activities, music, talks, tours and a raffle.

Royal Holloway prides itself on its flourishing music culture, and this year's season of musical events promises to be particularly enjoyable. Highlights include the St. Cecilia Evening in Royal Holloway's Picture Gallery, with a violin recital by Chloë Hanslip. Additionally, one of London's major concert venues, St John's, Smith Square, will be the setting for an evening concert by Royal Holloway, University of London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Robert Max.

This year's Thomas Holloway Recitals include a November performance by the Royal Holloway's resident Barbican Piano Trio, one of the UK's leading chamber music ensembles. In February, by popular demand, Sergei Dukachev returns for a weekend of music. Winner of many prizes in the former Soviet Union, Sergei is currently Professor at the State Institute in Ufa, Bashkortostan.

The Exploring Science Open Day will take place in March, an event held biannually as part of National Science Week. It takes place in the laboratories and lecture theatres of Royal Holloway, offering people of all ages an insight into the work of the College's science departments.

Finally, Royal Holloway will be taking part in next year's Heritage Open Days, co-ordinated by The Civic Trust and English Heritage. The College will be offering tours of the Picture Gallery and the Campus, which is set in 120 acres of beautiful parkland.
