Student volunteers produce mural masterpiece

Students from Royal Holloway, University of London had their paintbrushes at the ready when they got stuck into painting a mural at the Sea Cadets headquarters in Staines last week.

The event was one of many run as part of Community Action, Royal Holloway's student volunteering programme. Fifteen Royal Holloway students took part in the creative venture, using their teamwork skills to complete the project in just a few hours.

"The volunteers pulled out all the stops to produce a great result," said Student Volunteer Co-ordinator Matthias Rosenberg, who organised the event. "They persevered throughout the day to get it finished - it was an excellent effort from all involved. The Sea Cadets were great hosts, providing lunch and refreshments for everyone."

Des Seabrook, Leader of the Sea Cadets Staines branch said: "The Cadets had their first sight of the mural last night and the collective reaction was "cool" which, for Cadets is the epitome of unbridled enthusiasm! All who have seen it are happy with the result, thanks to all the volunteers who participated."

The Sea Cadets, whose motto is "Ready Aye Ready", is a youth charity. Providing a packed programme of activities for young people, volunteers can take part in a range of sports, such as boating, sailing, canoeing and adventure training, in addition to learning life skills such as cookery, computers and navigation.

Royal Holloway's volunteering programme, Community Action, involves over 140 students, and offers numerous volunteering opportunities, from conservation work to helping the elderly.

In addition to one-day events, the programme comprises long-term ventures, such as the Reminiscences Project, in which students are helping elderly nursing home residents to re-kindle their memories. Community Action continues to go from strength to strength and many exciting activities are planned for the coming months.
