Our campus

  • The College campus is set in 135 acres of parkland at Egham TW20 0EX in Surrey.
  • We are located 19 miles from central London and 7 miles from Heathrow Airport.The College also has a central London base at  Bedford Square in Bloomsbury
  • Founder’s Building is widely recognised as one of the most spectacular university buildings in the world. Founder’s is home to the famous Picture Gallery containing Thomas Holloway’s fine collection of Victorian paintings and the beautiful chapel; it also provides a remarkable residence for 500 students; and has a dining hall and restaurant, part of the library and some departments and services inside.
  • Royal Holloway’s multi-million pound estate investment programme continues to enhance the campus, most recently with a state-of-the-art lecture theatre complex – the stunning Windsor Building – and further phases of award-winning student accommodation, plus refurbishment and extensions to a number of academic buildings and services.

The Financial Statements include a report by the College's Auditors. In addition to the report contained within the Financial Statements the following wording is added at their request where Financial Statements are published electronically.

"Neither an audit nor a review provides assurance on the maintenance and integrity of the website, including controls used to achieve this, and in particular on whether any changes may have occurred to the financial statements since first published. These matters are the responsibility of the Council but no control procedures can provide absolute assurance in this area. Legislation in the United Kingdom governing the preparation and dissemination of financial statements differs from legislation in other jurisdictions".

Rankings

World rankings

Royal Holloway was ranked 88th in the 2010-11 Times Higher Education World University Rankings published in September 2010. Ranked 13th overall in the UK, the magazine's editor, Ann Mroz, described Royal Holloway as "truly world class". 

The QS World University Rankings 2011-12 saw 4 of the College's departments ranked in the top 200: History, Geography, Earth Sciences and Physics, with Physics ranked 47th.

The university is particularly highly rated for the wide-reaching impact of its research, ranking 3rd in the UK for citations, further cementing Royal Holloway’s status as one of the world’s premier research institutions.

Newspaper rankings

We are consistently ranked in the top tier of UK universities in rankings published by the British media.  For example:

Physics ranked 5th in the Guardian University Guide, 2012

Psychology and Media Arts each ranked 10th in the Guardian University Guide, 2012

Geography ranked 10th in the Complete University Guide 2012 and 11th in the Guardian University Guide, 2012

Drama ranked 6th in the Times Good University Guide, 2012

Earth Sciences ranked 9th in the Times Good University Guide, 2012 and 10th in the Guardian University Guide, 2012

National Student Survey (NSS)

Royal Holloway students have given us a big vote of confidence in each successive National Student Survey, conducted independently with final year students. National rankings have placed the College among the top group of universities for students’ overall satisfaction with the quality of their academic experience. 

Overall student satisfaction across the College has been above 84% every year for the past 3 years.  Our overall satisfaction rating in the most recent survey is 86% (and over 90% in 7 of our departments) putting us in the top quartile for universities in the UK. 

The survey aims to help prospective students make informed choices about where to apply to study by comparing results on the official Unistats website.

Research

Royal Holloway’s position as one of the UK’s leading research-intensive institutions was confirmed by the results of the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE 2008) conducted by the Higher Education Funding Council (HEFCE).

The scoring system for the RAE 2008 measures research quality in four categories, with the top score of 4* indicating quality that is world-leading and of the highest standards in terms of originality, significance and rigour.

The College is ranked 16th in the UK for research of 4* standard and 18th for 3* and 4* research.

Royal Holloway’s successes include:

  • 60% of research profile is rated as world-leading or internationally excellent, outperforming the national average of 50%
  • The Department of Music is the top department in the UK, further recognition of its world-leading research excellence
  • A further eight departments are in the top 10 ranked by proportion of 3* and 4* research: Biological Sciences (joint 3rd), Drama (joint 9th), Earth Sciences (joint 7th), Economics (joint 9th), Geography (joint 9th), German (joint 5th), Media Arts (joint 6th) and Psychology (joint 5th)

Our results are testament both to the hard work and dedication of our staff and the investment that the College has made in recent years.

Students

  • Royal Holloway has over 8,500 students from over 100 countries
  • Including visiting and exchange students this number rises to around 8,800.
  • Over 1,700 are postgraduates on a variety of taught and research degrees.
  • Just over 20% of students are from outside of the European Union.

Staff

There are currently 1,525 members of staff working at Royal Holloway across academic,  administrative and support areas.
