Royal Holloway, University of London has launched the Department of Social Work marking a new focus to its social work courses.
The new department – a relaunch of the Department of Health and Social care - will focus on providing high quality post graduate and post qualifying social work education with strengthened links with employers.
It will see the introduction of new courses, including the new MSc in Advanced Practice and Professional Doctorate programmes. The department is also appointing a new academic, Dr Tony Evans, who will be taking up his post as Professor of Social Work in January 2012.
The current research being undertaken by staff primarily focuses on social work education, practice and service delivery, including decision-making; race, ethnicity and mental health services; and the teaching of cultural competence. Dr Evans’s research interests in the areas of professional discretion and the use of knowledge in social work practice will complement and build on the department’s existing work.
Anna Gupta, head of the Department of Social Work, said: “This is an exciting move forward for the department and will see us offering courses that fully prepare students for careers in social work and continue to support their professional development. It reflects the current focus of the department and provides a strong direction for future research.”
The department has close partnerships with a large number of statutory and voluntary agencies, including the majority of the London boroughs, and child care agencies such as the NSPCC and Barnardo's. The Department of Social Work is now looking to further develop partnerships with employer agencies in order to support the provision of effective social work services.
