Bedford News offering a unique insight into Bedford College in the 1950s

Following the Bedford College reunion the Alumni Office received an exciting donation from a Bedford College alumna of three College newspapers, postcards and a library floor plan from the 1950s. The newspapers from November 1950, February 1951 and May 1951 offer us an intimate glimpse into the day to day lives of Bedford College alumnae from the period. Priced at 3d the newspapers include adverts for second hand books, railway tickets as well as sports reports, the announcement of a new principal and letters to the editor. Though many of the features convey the changes there have been in Higher Education over the last 60 years there are similarities that ring true today – ‘Dear Editor, I view with much alarm the growth amongst lecturers of the invidious habit of always arriving promptly for the 11-12 lecture in the morning. For those of us who find it impossible to continue throughout the morning without our social and reviving cup of coffee, this is a disaster of prime magnitude, an unwarranted encroachment on immemorial privilege...’ (November, 1950)
