A one day symposium for historians and archivists interested in working in the field of gender and education in any period. It will provide a unique opportunity to discuss current research themes and issues around the use and preservation of education archives.
This symposium builds on the initiative supported by the History of Education Society to foster dialogue between representatives of the archival and historical professions, record creators and postgraduate researchers. This symposium will offer: An opportunity to debate the availability and accessibility of school and higher education records.
Examples of new archival research into the history of gender and education. Fresh insights into the use and availability of educational records from a gendered perspective. Discussion of the processes involved in the generation of education archives for historical research that highlight gender issues.
The Bedford Centre and the AHRB Centre for the Study of the Domestic Interior hosted the Age, Gender and Domestic Culture Conference at Royal Holloway, University of London 3 July 2004. The event proved a success with a wide ranging international programme. With speakers from the Universities of Delaware, and Helsinki included in the panels. Speakers addressed the following themes: Housekeeping and housewifery, Domestic stereotypes and the Victorians Childhood, Adolescence and domestic cultures, Male authority and domestic responsibility, Representations of domestic culture in image and text, Gender and domestic space, Negotiating the home in old age, Disability and domestic culture. There was opportunity for networking and exchanging views. With hopefully some new collaborations in the near future. Conference Report and images to follow.
