Finding Employment

Once you've identified careers that interest you, you should start to gather information about the sector and potential employers.

Finding jobs

A starting point...

Remember that not all jobs are advertised. Look for trends in the sector to identify opportunities. Networking| (speaking with people you know or become acquainted with) can also be very effective. The days of speculative letters| are still here and can also be fruitful. The Careers Service runs workshops| on networking and job hunting (The Hidden Job Market) throughout the year.

Even though you are a student, there will be tax obligations (even if, ultimately, you don't pay tax). The direct.gov.uk| website has a lot of information about paying tax, tax allowances and managing your money.

Non-EU students are usually entitled to work up to 20 hours per week (term-time) and full-time in vacation however this is subject to your visa. The Careers Service runs information workshops about this and other events for non-EU students|.

GraduateStep|

In the UK you should not need to pay for an internship but in other countries it can be common practice. There are many organised international internship or work experience schemes so shop around. In the UK unpaid| internships usually don't comply with the National Minimum Wage but are still seen as the main route into certain sectors.
