Further Study

Postgraduate study can be:

  • a taught course leading to a master's degree
  • a research course leading to a master's degree- listen to a podcast about this.
  • a research degree leading to an MPhil or PhD
  • a vocational course covering a particular area of work (eg PGCE for teaching or GDL for Law)

Graduates have many reasons for choosing postgraduate study, including

  • I want to continue my subject

This is a good reason but you must be sure that you can sell it as a positive experience in subsequent job applications.
  • I'm not ready for the job market yet

Postgraduate study can 'buy' you time but you must make sure you use the time to make yourself a better candidate later on.

There are many different ways of finding courses. Find-a-Masters| has a database of many further study courses available.

Financing your postgraduate study can be very difficult. The main funding bodies are:

The academic department offering the course will be able to advise you of the appropriate body and the application procedure.

For more information about who is eligible for an award see the specific page on the Careers Group, University of London website. Some courses attract no funding at all. This means you will have to pay fees (for UK and other EU nationals) as well as your living costs. Alternative methods of financing your studies include:

  • Family support
  • Loans (e.g. career development)
  • Charities and educational trusts (may provide small grants)
  • Research and teaching assistant-ships (mainly in sciences)
  • Sponsorship from employers (not common)
  • Part-time work
  • Taking a year out to earn money
The Careers Group, University of London has a podcast| about funding.

If applying for a postgraduate course at Royal Holloway, it is recommended that applicants use the on-line application service Embark.

This service offers a speedier and more accurate exchange of applicant data, on-line reference requests and allows applicants to save incomplete application records for completion at a later date.
