UCAS Visit Days 2013

 Welcome from the Department of Classics

This is much more than just an interview day. Our aim is to give you a taste of actual academic life in the department, beginning with the opportunity to sit in on a first-year lecture, and then following up with talks and informal meetings in which you can learn more about the experience of studying classical subjects at Royal Holloway from current students and staff.

If you have already attended an Open Day here, this programme will give you a chance to really immerse yourself in what we do. Equally, if this is your first visit, we will be able to show you what studying Classics at Royal Holloway involves, from the practicalities of course structure to the wider aspects of student life in the department.

This day is primarily your opportunity to see the department at work, and we encourage you to make the departmental events your first port of call. However, there are several other useful talks and events on offer around campus on the day and where they overlap, we suggest your parents or guests attend these so that you get as much from the day as possible.

Welcome to Royal Holloway. This presentation includes a brief history and overview of the University, as well as focusing on student life at Royal Holloway.

11.40am – 12pm | Windsor Auditorium (see map)

Graduate careers: find out what makes Royal Holloway graduates so employable, and how we can help you to prepare for the choices ahead.

12.05 – 12.55 pm | Moore Building Lecture Theatre (see map)

Prof Sheppard invites you, and your guests, to sit in on a lecture being given to current undergraduates on her Introduction to Ancient Philosophy course.

1.15 – 1.50 pm | Moore Building Lecture Theatre (see map)

Welcome by Admissions Tutor, Dr Richard Hawley. 

Hear about degree structures, the range of courses available, some of the distinctive features of Classics at Royal Holloway, and the value of a classical degree in today’s world. There will also be a presentation from current students from the Classical Society, and a Q&A session. All parents and guests are warmly invited.

Meeting staff and students

If you have been invited to interview, you will have been allocated an individual time slot of about 20 minutes with a member of Classics staff during the afternoon. In the meantime during this part of the day, you will also be able to have an informal chat with current students and other members of staff, who can answer any further questions you have about Royal Holloway, our courses and student life. There will be a separate drop-in room for parents and other guests, where they can meet staff and find out more about academic life in the department and beyond. You are also welcome to take advantage of other campus events and activities during this time (see brochure).

We hope very much that you will enjoy your visit, and will find it a useful and rewarding glimpse into the study of the ancient world at Royal Holloway.
