Drama alumnus Diego Pellecchia wins 2013 IFTR New Scholars' Prize.
Description
Drama alumnus Dr. Diego Pellecchia has been selected as a recipient of the 2013 IFTR Young Scholar's Prize for his essay 'Ezra Pound and the Politics of Noh Films', in which he explores the role of Noh in Pound's controversial political activism during the years preceding World War II. The article shows how Pound's interest for Noh continued after the publication of Noh, or, Accomplishment, in which he edited Ernest Fenollosa's co-translations of Noh plays, and was stimulated by early audiovisual recordings of Noh plays that started circulating in the late 1930s. Through the film medium Pound wished to disseminate in the West what he regarded not only as an aesthetically beautiful art-form, but also as an ideal vehicle of good ethics.
