Course registrations and assessments

Please find below all the information you should require about  course registrations and assessment for the 2012/13 academic year.

If you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact us.|

Instructions to Candidates

  • Instructions to Candidates 2012/13
  • It is essential all students read these. For example, being unaware of an assessment offence explained within it is not accepted as a defence during disciplinary hearings. Therefore, it is in your interest to make sure that you understand all of the relevant regulations. Students being assessed by coursework only are required to read sections 1 and 7-12.

Key Dates

Checking Course Registration

  • You will be entered for assessment in all the courses on which you are registered.  It is therefore vital that you check your course registrations as early as possible in the academic year, through the Campus Connect Portal, and report any errors to the Senior Faculty Administrator in the department/school responsible for the course(s).
  • The final College deadlines for students to check and request changes to their course registrations are Wednesday 12th December 2012 for Term 1 and Full year courses and Friday 18th January 2013 for Term 2 and 3 courses. However, some Academic Departments may set earlier deadlines so you should also check with your department/school regarding their specific deadlines.
  • If you are registered on the wrong course(s) and/or on insufficient units and you choose not to rectify the situation by the stated deadlines, you will be entered for the assessment and you will eventually be graded as failing the course
  •  Please be aware that once registrations are finalised, there will be no further opportunity to amend registrations and examination timetables will be produced based on this information.  If course registrations (including resit and extracurricular registrations) are missing, you will not be entered for the assessment.

Candidate Numbers

  • All students will be allocated a personal candidate number in mid October. This will be available to view on the Study Tab of your Campus Connect Portal
  • You are required to use your candidate number for all official written examinations that you take at Royal Holloway and many departments will ask you to use it to identify some or all assessed coursework.
  • Please email student-administration@rhul.ac.uk after October if it appears that you have not been allocated a candidate number.
  • As the purpose of the candidate number is to ensure that your work is marked anonymously, it is essential that you do not use your candidate number in conjunction with anything that identifies you, such as your name or Student Reference Number.  All members of staff who are authorised to see your candidate number (and who will not be involved in the marking process) will already be able to look it up so you should never have to give it to anyone.

Special Examination Arrangements

Extenuating Circumstances

If you are taken ill or there are other extenuating circumstances that you believe have adversely affected your performance in an exam, prevented you from attending an exam or affected your performance at any point during the academic year, it is your responsibility to notify the Chair(s) of the Sub-board of Examiners in your department(s)/school(s), in writing, of such extenuating circumstances and to provide the appropriate evidence.

You should read Section 7 of the 'Instructions to Candidates'| for full details relating to the submission and consideration of extenuating circumstances. However, please note the following important points:

  • If you are an Undergraduate student, you must submit your written statement and supporting evidence, where appropriate, before midday Tuesday 4th June 2013 (but you should also check with your department/school regarding specific assessment/exam related submissions).
  • If you are a Postgraduate taught student, you  should notify your department/school by the date set by the department/school, which must be before the Sub-board of Examiners meets to agree marks (but you should also check with your department/school regarding specific assessment/exam related submissions).
  • It is recommended that you submit your request and evidence as soon as possible, even if you are unsure whether your circumstances have affected your performance, or you feel that your circumstances are very private or confidential. Do not wait until you receive your marks . Requests for special consideration will not be considered retrospectively and the private or confidential nature of circumstances will not later be accepted as grounds for appeal.
  • The Sub-board of Examiners will review all evidence of extenuating circumstances submitted.  However, it is at the Sub-board’s discretion whether to take any circumstances into account.
  • In order to provide appropriate evidence for extenuating circumstances during the examination period please use the medical certificate form.
