Although the Department of Economics was only founded in 1995, it has already established itself as one of the three major economics research and teaching departments in the London area|. It has been able to combine the vitality and innovation of a new department with the traditional academic strengths of an established college and university.
Staff have been educated and held academic posts at leading universities throughout the world, including Cambridge, Oxford, the LSE, Yale, and Harvard. They bring together the differing perspectives of all these universities, and have established programmes combining the best elements of education from each. Members of staff regularly publish in the top economics journals and all courses are lectured by members of staff who are in active research in that field. Students are therefore assured of high quality teaching given by specialists.
The Economics department is located in the Horton building, in the centre of the campus. The building was recently completely refurbished; other than lecture theatres and seminar rooms, the Horton building also contains the new Experimental Economics laboratory, Undergraduate Economics Hub| and Postgraduate Computer and Study Room. Elsewhere, MSc Finance students have use of a simulation Trading Floor|.
