Prospective students

John Maynard Keynes said that ‘economists are the rarest of birds…the master-economist must reach a high standard in several different directions and must combine talents not often found together. He must be a mathematician, historian, statesman, philosopher – in some degree’. Economics is an intriguing subject to study precisely because it enables you to analyse the world around you in ever greater detail. What causes interest rate fluctuations? How is government policy impacting upon equality in the labour market? How are businesses implementing the ‘green agenda’? These are some of the questions that a degree in economics enables you to grasp hold of.

The Department of Economics at Royal Holloway offers a variety of high-quality undergraduate and postgraduate degree courses, all awarded by the University of London. For more information, click on the tabs below.

The Department offers several different types of undergraduate degree courses: single honours, joint honours, and programmes with Economics as a major or minor subject.

All programmes in the Department of Economics contain a strong core of microeconomics, macroeconomics and quantitative methods, complemented by optional units in a number of specialist interest areas.

As one of the UK's top Economics Departments, Royal Holloway is an excellent place for postgraduate study. The Department has an established Master's portfolio; we also introduced the MSc Finance in 2012 and will be launching the MSc Economics and Statistics in 2013.

For students with non-specialist Economics backgrounds, the department offers a nine-month Diploma in Economics| and Diploma in Financial Economics|. This offers students with high academic ability the opportunity to develop their skills in Economics to the point where they are eligible to enter the MSc programme.

The Postgraduate Research Programme in Economics provides the students with rigorous training and experience in economics analysis. Students get the opportunity to pursue independent research under the guidance of highly qualified academic staff recruited from pre-eminent Economics departments in the UK and internationally.
