Undergraduate
We offer several different types of degree course: single honours, joint honours and courses with Economics as a major or minor subject. Teaching is by lectures and small seminar groups. In addition, the department offers extra tuition free of charge to students encountering difficulties.
All of the single & joint honours courses in the Economics department contain a strong 'core' of microeconomics, macroeconomics and quantitative methods, complemented by options chosen by you to reflect your own interests.
Single honours degrees
In the first year, students take Principles of Economics, Quantitative Methods and the Economics Workshop plus another option; the second year is more technical and involves taking Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Quantitative Methods and an optional course unit; the third year is made up entirely of optional course units and a compulsory dissertation. In the Financial & Business Economics degree, certain options are compulsory.
Joint honours degrees
In the first year, students take Principles of Economics, Quantitative Methods and two course units in their other department. In the second year, students take Microeconomics, Macroeconomics and two courses in their other department. In the final year, students take two courses in each of their departments. For some courses, a dissertation in the Economics department is compulsory
Degrees with Economics as a major subject
Students do the same as for single honours courses except that one of their options is in another department.
Degrees with Economics as a minor subject
Students do only one course unit of Economics each year: they do Principles of Economics in the first year and a core Economics unit in the remaining two years
