The
purpose built Electron Microscopy Unit was established on the Royal Holloway
site in 1984 with the aim of providing a service for the entire
Faculty of Science. The Unit is entirely self-contained;
it houses both transmission and scanning electron microscopes, a preparation
laboratory, ultramicrotomy room and dark room.
As well as research the Unit is involved with student teaching; it contributes to courses for biology, biochemistry, earth sciences and geography undergraduates. Biological science students have the option to carry out an entire module in the Unit in the third year. In addition, any final year student of the Faculty of Science can utilise the facilities of the Unit for the practical element of their dissertation. Postgraduate students are actively encouraged to make full use of the facilities available. The Unit staff are happy to give demonstrations and tutor group tutorials, we are visited annually by groups of first year 'A' level students studying Cell Biology. The Unit also undertakes commercial work. |
